DUTY CALLS
Some months ago, I invited a friend of mine to come to one of our services. He told me he was unable to make it to church because he was on “duty call”. When I asked him what exactly “duty call” meant he answered, “I am home this weekend but I need to be available twenty four hours a day with my pager and cell phone handy in case some of the nurses at the hospital have questions about my patients. I have to have an answer for them immediately.
While meditating on G-d’s Word, I realized that the apostle Peter also told us in G-d’ Word that we are on duty all the time. Here is what he said:
1Peter 3:15 “Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.” (NLT)
We are supposed to be ready to explain our faith twenty-four hours a day to anyone who may ask about our Christian hope, (faith). In the Modern King James we read:
1Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear.”
Again we see the urge to be always ready to give an answer for the reason of our faith or hope that is in us. May the great G-d remind us on a daily basis that the true Christian life is and will always be a twenty four hours a day spiritual “Duty Call” in the eyes of the Lord. We may not all be physicians, but we certainly are ambassadors of “The Heavenly Kingdom” and now more than ever we should be on a twenty four hours a day “Duty Call”. May He continue to use us.
